FOLLOW THROUGH in RAPID FIRE PISTOL

OK – YOU CAN STOP LAUGHING NOW!

As a newbie to RFP, you could easily consider that there is insufficient time between shots to conduct ANY form of follow through – and you would be WRONG!

There re a number of important items that you need to be fully aware of after EACH shot in the series:

1.      Did you feel the trigger stop after you activated the trigger,

2.      Where were the sight ‘aimed’ when you activated the trigger,

3.      Where were the sights ‘aimed’ at the completion of the recoil

4.      Did you fully release the trigger after each shot?

YES, there is time to ‘register’ each of these items in your brain for analysis after the series.  All it takes is conscious attention to them.  This comes with practice and they will make the difference between a ‘spray and pray’ attitude and consciously firing five ‘good’ shots in a series.

FOLLOW THROUGH – PART 1 (i.e. for each shot)

In addition to the four items above, as your RFP technique improves you can:

5.      be conscious of your body movement when traversing between targets,

6.      maintain your grip, stance and sight alignment, resisting the urge to immediately look at the target or relax. This steady control ensures that the pistol remains stable during the recoil phase, helping to achieve accuracy and repeatable results in subsequent shots.

FOLLOW THROUGH – PART 2 (i.e. after the fifth shot in each series)

One of your objectives will be consistency for each shot – easily missed is that after each of the first four shots in a RFP series  you have to traverse to the next shot, and any pressing need for this action is missing after the last shot in the RFP series.

This missing component can affect your last shot in the RFP series, and is easily remedied, simply (as part of your follow through after the fifth shot continue to travers to an (imaginary) sixth target.

Throughout each RFP series you need to maintain your grip, stance and sight alignment, resisting the urge to immediately look at the target or relax. This steady control ensures that the pistol remains stable during the recoil phase, helping to achieve accuracy and repeatable results in subsequent shots.
