TRAVELLING BY AIR

DOMESTIC AIR TRAVEL

1.      Get a ‘permit to travel with ammunition’ for the airline/s you will be using.  These as simply obtained online (try the ‘dangerous goods’ pages on their website) with only your name and licence number to be supplied.

2.      Pack the locked ammo case in with your booked luggage.  Max 5kg including the ammo case.

3.      I recommend placing each pistol in a gun rug.

4.      Pack your guncase carefully with foam or old towels to take up any spare room.  Lock it!

If you are using padlocks, know where you put the keys (and the backup keys)!  I use combination padlocks.

5.      You WILL NOT be able to confirm your seating or get an online boarding pass if you are travelling with guns/ammo.  You will have to book in at the desk; have your ‘permit to travel with ammunition’ and your firearms licence handy.

6.      You may be asked to get your ammo box out of your checked baggage to weigh it – lots of fun in the middle of departures check-in; as is repacking it!

7.      Your gun case will be marked with yellow tape (Special/Oversize baggage) and have to be taken to the ‘Special/Oversize baggage’ check in desk.

8.
Text Box: NOTE: Allow time for the check-in and pick-up processes! If you get a server who has not handled firearms/ammo check-in before (it happens), they will have to get a supervisor who will run them through the process – this all takes time.

ON arrival at your destination airport, double check that you have your luggage receipts and your firearms licence!  THEN:

9.      Collect your booked luggage from the carousel – this will appear before your firearms arrive at Special/Oversize Baggage.

10.  Go to Special Baggage and present your luggage receipt AND your firearms licence.  Nobody else can collect your firearms, even if they have the luggage receipt and your firearms licence!
